Silly Gaming Habits

A lot of articles recently have been created with Resident Evil 5 as the inspiration and this one is yet another one to add to that list.

Jeff and I have just played through Resident Evil 5 in co-op mode on the Veteran difficulty. It was our first run through of the game and we did pretty damn well since we didn’t know what to expect… during our play through, I did notice a very funny and very silly habit that Jeff has…

He’s a chronic whiner lol, and the line I hear most from him is “GOD DAMMIT!” whenever something really stupid happens in the game like we get killed a split second after the cutscene ends and the gameplay begins again… and these are legitimate times to complain. For example, there is one boss battle where at the start, if one of the players has a minimum amount of health, there’s a chance that the boss will kill you right at the very beginning of the battle itself if you’re not fast enough to dodge the attack.

In any case, Jeff saying the words “GOD DAMMIT” is now tattooed into my brain because he’s said it so many times. Of course, he’s not the only one with a silly gaming habit. I have to look around at every little corner of the game environment whether Jeff has already been there and cleared the room of items or not. I don’t know why, maybe it’s just the “exploran gaem” fan in me that tells me to do it.

I also have another strange gaming habit… Whenever I get hurt in a game in any way I’ll go “ow” or “ah” or something along those lines as if I’ve really been hit myself and not the character in the game. I have no explanation as to why I do that… I just do.

So anyway, tell us about your silly gaming habit.

I have a weird gaming habit when I play my DS. When I'm playing, I tend to 'pull and push' the stylus so that it goes in and out very fast. That means that my styli lose the grip that keeps them inside the DS fast and then one day, I'll just lose my stylus. I've gone through about 4 so far
When I play games like The Legend of Zelda I talk to all the NPC's multiple times to see if they say anything new XP
It's that bad huh. I probably get too into it, I'm the same when I play WoW, if I die from something silly I'll usually be mouthing off to myself, or if I get ganked I'll tell the other player what a faggot he is, etc. I guess I was surprised how little complaining I heard on your end.

I do that too. My stylus will fall right out of the DS if you hold it so the slot is facing down. But I have managed to keep both my original styli for nearly 2 years.
when my one friend really gets into a game (seems like it happens more on multiplayer), sometimes his mouth opens and gets wider. It's kinda strange but his gf points it out every so often and can't help but laugh at him.

i know what you're talking about ^_^

I throw the controller through the TV if a level boss really talks trash to me after whuping my ass (or stomps over my mutilated corpse) thinking to myself "I finally got him!" XD

j/k, I'll have an answer later for you guys on that one!
XD There were a few times in later parts of RE5 where the enemies have machine guns and they're shooting at me and I'm running for cover going "ow ow ow ow ow ow ow!" lol.
I think my most uttered phrase when playing a shooting game is "fuckfuckfuckfuck..." - usually said when I'm getting shot to hell running for cover. You know, because I'm dumb and not behind cover in the first place. "GOD DAMMIT!" is a close second though. I also have a habit of talking crap to the screen after I finally beat a boss or something that's been giving me a hard time.
Meh, I think it's hard to pick out your own silly habits, and Jeff yelling 'God Dammit' is just American Lynk, we overreact to everything. As for me, I know I do the whole multiple talking to NPCs thing, and I do the check every corner thing in RPGs, and I'm pretty sure I yell at the screen in FPS games, hard to say since life isn't in 3rd, so I can't really see myself... From the few times playing the FIIIIIVE demo with Lynk, I did notice that sometimes I was like... 'where the fuck did he go' then glance at the map and he's scavenging some building halfway backwards toward the beginning XD. Didn't notice the 'ows' since Lynk doesn't have a PS3 mic, though my mic was on, but I don't think I said anything.
My brother pointed out a habit of mine that I did not notice. Whenever I play a console, I sit on a chair about 1 and a half meters away from the tv, then as I play, I kind of edge closer. I've never really noticed that.
Hmm...

I dunno, I guess I just tend to curse a lot when gaming
Ah yes, for habits I've had historically, I'd say as a child I was a demon with games.

I've broken two discs in half as a kid, one was Alundra for PS1 because it was a used copy that was prone to freezing (I later rebought it and beat it), and the other was NBA 2K2 because I got my ass kicked every which way (friends, the AI) and felt the need to relieve my stress with it by going the extra mile.

I've also broken a couple of controllers by slamming them on the ground, like an Xbox controller over NBA 2K5 (mostly because I lost a 10 point lead in the fourth quarter and went bonkers over letting the game slip), and I know I broke a PS2 controller as well but I can't think of the game that drove me to do it.

As I got older, I've basically stuck with the lifelong habit of cursing at a game ("Damnit!") to hating on the developers and stating things that have made my playthrough difficult ("Why did they have to make the platforms so far apart!? They're a bunch of assholes!").

Sometimes I still boycott a game and choose not to play it for a while if it's REALLY pissing me off!
I managed to break an original Game Boy when i was a kid lol

I call them "griefers"
XD I wish I had a recording of him whining during our run through of Mercenaries... man, he's developed whining into quite the talent XD
Do you play many competitive online games Lynk? That's the best place to find griefers... "Stop spawn killing me fag!!!"
I thought spawn killers were the griefers/trolls. Only when they do it specifically to annoy people though XP
no respawn protection? lame server/game.
People complain too much in games. If you suck, you suck, get over it.
Hmm... I don't know what habits I have. Seems like something someone else would have to notice. Maybe some of you can point mine out in TOR when the time comes. hehe

I am a bit of an obsessive saver. One of the first things I usually do is check the key bindings to see what "Quick Save" is mapped to. I don't know if that is really a silly habit exactly, but it's the only thing that comes to mind.
Good luck trying to quicksave when you play TOR

No bob, that is a perfectly natural reaction to games where choosing badly means death and subsequent reloading! I do this also.

Easier said than done! XD

I'd say I'm always up for a little "damnit!" or "SHIT!" whenever I lose in a game on single player. I'd feel a little awkward telling the AI "good game" when it's kicking my ass, but there are periods where I do get focused enough to not let losing be bothersome.

Funny thing is, nine times out of ten it seems I advance further in a game after my complaining, almost like after I ventilate my frustration, I get a second wind and get better!

As for multiplayer online, yeah, I expect to lose. But once in a while I still swear to myself when I let a match go and allow a comeback! XD
I'm unusually quiet when playing games. I can play for ten hours straight not saying any word. If I'm playing online, or with someone else beside me, I get a little more talkative, but nothing deeper than the casual positive and encouraging groan at my pals' performance or my complaints (at this point I get kinda mad, actually) on their failure.

When the game is difficulty and we're having a hard time getting across something, I get really nervous, though. I've catched myself throwing "you moron!" insults more than once.

Definetly this. And, as Mave, I too explore every little dark alley on RPGs. Multiple times. Multiple. I mean it, thanks.
