Welcome to Ausfailia (IFHTC! Part 4)

Here we are again for another edition of “I fucking hate this country”… it’s getting tiring having to write these entries up, I don’t particularly enjoy it, but whenever I hear about some of that asshattery this country gets up to, So where are we now?

Well right now I’m wondering if it will ever get to the stage where the Australian government succeeds in its efforts to close off the country to anything they may find objectionable that they end up blocking my access to my own web site… sounds crazy, I know, but then trying to filter the Internet is some crazy stuff to begin with.
Recently I’ve seen some stories posted on the web telling of how the Australian government plans to use their Internet filter to block sites selling mature rated games. These are legitimate sites we’re talking about that are selling products that aren’t even banned in Australia. To add to that, this is a country that deemed DVD region coding to be an unfair restriction of trade practices and allowed PS2’s and other devices to be modded so that they could play discs from other regions (as well as pirated games, though that’s a whole other story).
To top it all off, this also affects online games that may contain adult content, including Second Life… maybe the Australian government just want to keep all the furries out of the country, or maybe they prefer the people to have sex in real life… or maybe it’s just “WON’T SOMEONE PLEEEEEEEAAASE THINK OF THE CHILDREN”… yeah, that sounds about right. Well it’s nothing new I guess, after all Sexy Poker for WiiWare was just the latest game to be denied classification in the country… though it’s not like we should really care about watered down porn where you have to work to get to the watered down porn part…
Meanwhile, whether Australia will ever get an R18+ rating for its video games is still up in the air and not going anywhere at all… but at least I know that the government is doing all it can to try to tell us what we don’t have the right to view/play.

but look at America, sure there are a couple well known cases of videogames (allegedly) causing people to go nuts and shoot up the block, but videogames are so prevalent that that is such a small percentage and the same thing could happen with movies or music. And it's not like we are lenient on M games, hell 2 weeks ago when I bought Fable 2 I was carded to see if I was over 17 and I'm 20 and look even older. Lynk, you should move to America in protest.
I'm not sure that in the end the governments efforts will have any real effect. They're TRYING to block a lot of things, but so far they haven't succeded at all. It's just really stupid that they're spending all of this effort on censorship that just does not work at all. They think they can control the Internet and what Australians can view. The problem is that there's a million and one ways to get around any filter they could implement for anyone who really wants to get around them.
Such a waste of money and resources.
go find a 6 foot rubber dildo and tape it above the front doors to the head branch of what ever department is trying to censor everything.
I knew the beatification in Australia was bad, but I wasn't aware that it was to that degree. A question, though: Is this restricted to games or are they trying to block everything sex related?

FREE OUR GAMES As an avid gamer in his late 20's, the Federal Government's decision to block websites hosting and selling mature video games hurts me. For years, gamers have imported games that are banned or edited. These games have never gotten an R18+ classification and have just been banned. Why? Because Australia is the only developed country that does not have a rating beyond MA15+ for video games. Every other form of media has one, so why not video games? This is about having our online freedom crushed because some believe we cannot think for ourselves. I think most reasonable adults like me can make that call. - Gamer
