benchmarks

#1 | 23 October 2008, 2:07 PMOld
Do you use benchmarks for test your computer? which? I guess that anyone that uses a computer for games will probably want to benchmark it, whenever you tweak it or change its hardware.

The most known I guess is 3dmark, but really, 3dmark is just a piece of bloatware, the demo is a 500mb download and you can't change any settings (the default settings are too much for my pc), and it only supports directx, hence just windows.

but I found two pretty looking benchmarks that supports both OSes, one is lightsmark and unigine's demos

Unigine's sanctuary and tropics demos are really nice, pretty intensive though, I can only get 4 fps with them
with Lightsmark I get 32-33 fps average

If i feel like booting to windows I'll try them again and see what I get.

I have actually never used benchmarks, but I have never had a computer that was on the bleeding edge to really make it worth it.

From what I understand, which is not much, benchmarking your computer helps you adjust settings for your hardware to optimize your computer for gaming. The program basically runs a movie of sorts that requires rendering 3d graphics and the like to see how well your computer can process all the information and how well it performs. For example you can benchmark before and after you overclock your processor to see if the change in performance is worth it. Personally I've never benchmarked my computer, but from what I understand, that is an application of its use.

Well with a console, the most you do with a game is insert it into the console and press start.

Well, idealy... some of these PS3 games really piss me off with their installing crap.

your point? If it weren't for that annoying anti-piracy crap, you wouldn't need to insert anything after installing it in your hdd, it's all pros and cons.
i don't want this to transform into a computer vs console debate, anyway

the point of a benchmark is to have a quantitative reference of your pc's perfomance, so if you tune it or change its hardware/software you can benchmark it again and see if there's improvement. These benchmark are game oriented but there are benchmarks for anything, for example not so long ago I got another 200gb drive so I benchmark it against my current drive (on linux is a trivial command and takes a few seconds after all), the hdd that got a higher score went as my main drive while the other went for data storage.

I know my computer is not up to current standards, it's not horrid, but it could be far better. Given I had a few thousand dollars, I'd replace it. But as it stands there's really in benchmarking my current rig.
About a maid I'll sing a song,
who didn't have her family long.
Not only did she do them wrong,
she did every one of them in.
So, have you heard?

@Mav: I think Lynk's point was that you don't need to check specs and stuff when playing console games because they are made for the consoles specs already

Exactly. I have a console, I buy a game, I know my console will run that game because it was made specifically for that console and I don't have to worry about anything.

Plus I was talking about how things ARE, not the way they should be It is possible to copy an entire game to a console and not have to insert the disc ever again too.

It's just that I could never be bothered worrying about the specific performance of my PC, so whenever I do get into one of these issues I'm like "ugh, I don't have the patience for this, I just want play the damn game dammit"

Maybe if someone else kept the PC up to date and running smoothly for me, then it'd be okay... cause to be honest, I can't be fucked lol.

I didn't make this thread for a pc vs console debate, those who don't give a fuck about a pc, do the same I do with the console threads.

I'm not spouting any pc vs console thing just to piss you off, I was simply replying to you. Don't be so overly sensitive. If someone who is interested finds this thread, then they'll come in and post in it. If you find it a little too quiet in here and there aren't enough people who share your views, then how about you try to attract some more visitors yourself.

My brother does it all the time, and sometimes, he busts the computer while he's at it. Don't know how he does it.
