Valkyria Chronicles

This is the place to discuss the recently released SEGA game. Talk about your favorite characters, moments, battles, discuss strategies, or whatever. Please remember to mark spoilers as such.

If you own a PS3 and you don't own this game...

I'll start it off with my favorite non-major characters.

Vyse: Aside from his pure bad-assery, his one-liners and him just downright being cool. Once he unlocks all of his potentials he becomes easily one of the best Shock Troopers. The dude is awesome, and I never even played Skies of Arcadia...

Jane Turner: This lady is another one that turns into a beast of a Shock Trooper, when her potentials are going she is pretty much unstoppable.

Jann: Hilarious... plus if he hangs out with Largo, he becomes a tank killing beast... seriously.

Marina Wulfstan: Snipers in this game, are definitely niche characters, they can be largely useless for maps and on some maps they are very useful. I just like Marina's attitude, she fits the role of a sniper.

So for those of you that own the game, what are your thoughts on it so far, or if you're on the fence about getting it, we'll convince you too.

Man, I'm having so much fun with this game, but of course, that's a given since I really like tactical rpgs lol. While this is a lot more action than it is rpg, it still gives me the same feeling I got when I'd be playing Fire Emblem Path of Radiance and Radiant Dawn. It's great XD

Yeah, Vyse is a champ and I love how characters from Skies of Arcadia are in Valkyria Chronicles, it's so damn cool I love it when you move him first out into an area, his potentials will activate and he'll be like "Woah-oh, our hero's in trouble now!!" and then when he shoots people and unloads the entire magazine into their face he's like "HAHAHAHAH!!". It truly is a pleasure whenever he goes on into battle I have him working together with Rosie a lot who I love as well cause she's got the big sister potential and strong willed as well. Of course, it's a given that you use the badged characters in the first place since they give you more Command Points. Also, while Jane is good, I've never really found any real use for her potentials since it's more useful to ensure your Shock Troops are better defensively than they are offensively... cause offensively, they're already powerhouses when you equip them with the power based machine guns. That's why it's good to use Vyse and Rosie, cause they'll get defensive stat bonuses.

Vyse, Aika AND Fina are actually in Valkyria Chronicles. Vyse is the Shock Trooper, Aika is a Scout and Fina is the medic... PS3: SEGA's Valkyria Chronicles SEGA Cameo

And yeah Jann is great to use too. It's great, he's always like "Ooh, look at my muscles" when he gets tank killer activated, and then he starts singing "I could get looost in these muscles" whenever he's around a bunch of other guys XD It's great lol. I always team up Jann with Largo. They're a great Lancer team.

Oh, and Alicia and Noce make a great team. The scouts themselves are so damn good to use. I like to get Alicia out in the field first and then follow up with Noce, positioning him near Alicia since he's very protective of her. Otherwise, if the mission has Alicia sticking closer to Welkin, I'll have Freesia or Aika there instead. There was this one bit in chapter 15 where... it's the final fight with Selvaria and you have to try to kill her while she has her back turned to you or she'll simply dodge your fire. I got her really easily in that level using Alicia and Noce. Just when you think you have a good shot at Selvaria from behind, she runs off and into this corner looking directly at the team you've massed at their main base... so what I did was, I got Noce, and I moved him... literally sneaking near Selvaria and then straight pass her fast enough not to get too much damage and into an area where she didn't have a firing solution. Doing that made her turn and face Noce and away from the rest of my team. Then I moved Alicia and snuck up riiiiiight behind, I ordered Alicia to neutralise which makes it so that Selvaria can't counter attack when Alicia attacks. Alicia unloaded 5 bullets straight into Selvaria's head and brought her health down to half way exactly. So then Selvaria gets shocked and turns to face Alicia and away from Noce and then I end the move before Selveria can open fire. XD And this is where I have her by the balls... so to speak. Noce is is a great position now, I choose him and sneak him into a firing solution so I can get a clean headshot on Selvaria from a good angle where she won't turn around. XD I did it and got her in the head and defeated her so easily. It was such a great manoeuvre that I had to share it with ya'll.

For the snipers, I like using three actually... Marina, Catherine and Cezary. Marina is by far the best, though she only really shines when she's alone. Catherine is great when you need a sniper close to the others in your team and is also good if she's near an engineer and it's good to have her hiding in grass. Cezary is great in the desert areas. He was really useful in chapter 7 and also for levels with plenty of other snipers.

Out of the Engineers, I use Claudia and Nadine... mostly because Claudia is pretty cute and Nadine goes really well with Zaka, and because later on in the game having a Darcsen around activates some potentials in certain people.

Those are my favourites, though I sometimes switch in and out a few other people in the list of 20 depending on the situation.

Haha, I did almost the same thing except I used Alicia and Freesia, oh and smoke shells I still only got a D on the mission though I know what you mean about the Shock Troopers being amazing on defense, for the side quest mission, the one centered around Welkin, after Alicia is temporarily unavailable and you have to prevent Imps from getting to a refugee camp I used Vyse and Edy along with the mandatory Rosie, Largo and Welkin. I sent Vyse to the left and he single-handedly defeated every Imp on the left side of the map, btw flamethrowers RULE for taking out troops behind cover/in grass. I sent Rosie and Edy to the right and they handled the 2 Imp Scouts that try to get past as well as every other troop there. Then I used Welkin and Largo, set-up a smoke screen and then get Largo to 1-hit all three tanks in the rear it was pretty sweet.

I got a B on that mission because I wasted a couple of moves at the start.

Oh, I did that mission differently... What I did was send Rosie off to the left by herself and then put Largo right behind her. Then I got Catherine and put her on the hill in front of the camp and had her snipe pretty much all of the soldiers that weren't hidden and having Claudia resupply her with ammo whenever she needed it while keeping Claudia close to the Edelweiss as well. Rosie ends up taking out all of the scouts that try to come in from the left on her own, you don't need to move her at all once she's in that spot. Largo is there behind Rosie (and hidden in the grass) so that when that first heavy tank goes to try to destroy the Edelwiess, it exposes its radiator and Largo has a clear shot at it. Also, Largo has a clear shot at the medium tank after that. The last bit you gotta worry about are the hidden enemies coming in from the right. I just used the Edelweiss lob a few shrapnel rounds into the grass around there while Claudia picked off any that came too close to the camp with the Edelweiss firing its machine gun as well. Then the last tank is easy, you just end a turn and let it come to you... then all you do is use either Largo or the Edelweiss and move them around behind it to hit its radiator. Got a B for that one, though for a reason that is a lot more stupid than anything you could imagine... I forgot what I was doing and ended a turn when I had a few CP left to finish the mission. Could've gotten an A so easily *cries*

Oh and I finished the game just now XD

Here are my stats for the first runthrough of the game... I didn't do too badly, though with a lot of the missions, if I replayed them again without saving the game, I would've definately gotten A ranks since you end up figuring them out by the time you're on your last move to end the mission lol.

A = 8
B = 10
C = 5
D = 5

I could run through what I got for each and how many moves, but god damn, there's a lot to type up if I did that lol. Maybe later.

Oh. and I was right... there are a lot of well known and excellent voice actors in this game including three of my favourites Steve Blum, Kari Wahlgren and Robin Atkin Downes... oh and Dwight Schulz was also in it LOL.

And finally, another cool thing is that an Australian orchestra, the Eminence Symphony Orchestra were the ones who did the music for this game with Hitoshi Sakimoto as the composer. I posted a thread about them in twilight awhile back: Eminence Symphony Orchestra

I still haven't got a ranking above C. I've only played up to Chapter 4, but still, not sure how the ranking system is calculated. I thought it be turns taken to complete the mission, but it's not just that, is it?

Yeah, the ranking is based on how many turns you take. You can move your characters as many or as little as you want, but it's all about how many turns you use. Also, you don't have to kill everyone on the field, just do whatever it takes to complete the mission objective.

One thing that that sucks about the US/Europe/Australia version of this game is that they renamed the ranks from the Japanese version to cut out the S rank... so while you get A ranks in missions, they're actually S ranks with B being A rank and so on.

That is kind of the only semi-bad thing about the game, the fact that to get some of the missions to an A rank you sort of just make a dash for the goal instead of strategically moving from base to base, so sometimes I found myself just shunning the idea of getting a good rank and opting for the completely obliterate the enemy route . Oh and I guess I lied about my Ch. 15 rating, I think it ended up a B, it was the next Chapter where you lead the Marmota through the minefield that I got a D on, I needlessly created all rockslides possible xP.

But yea your rating for a given level is dependent only on the number of turns it takes to complete a mission. Other things add to your exp and $ earned, such as destroying armor, killing enemy leaders (the red ones with a CP marker next to their name) and killing enemy aces (enemies with a unique name) you also get to keep the weapons of any enemy aces you kill though I found their weapons to be largely useless.

I think my luckiest battle so far was in Ch. 17 that I just finished the one where you have to defeat Jaeger, I managed to do it luckily in 4 turns and come out with an A rating. I basically had 3 lancers take out Jaeger's tank which was already damaged a bit from the previous turn. Then I was totally taken for a loop when they revealed that I had only taken off the tank's outer armor. Luckily I still had 3 CP, I had my engineer reload Largo, and had him destroy the tank with my last 2 CP with two shots to the radiator. Basically my strategy was to lure Jaeger to a point where I could just have 3 lancers unload on him and have enough CP saved up from previous turns to be enough to blow up his tank for good. Basically I got lucky in 2 areas, having saved just enough CP and that Jaeger was fool enough to fall in my trap

I'm definitely going to be going through a New Game + though, I didn't have enough time to finish it tonight, but I'll probably do it tomorrow. I may take a break from this after I beat it to go finish Resistance 2, but I'll definitely be coming back to play this again.

Yeah, I got A on that one too. but I only used two lancers instead of 3. I took over the closest base to the very east where the ehavy tank is and set two lancers and an engineer on the roof. I then drew Jeager in with a turn so he could come and attack the Edelweiss and then launched a whole bunch of rockets at him, but just enough so that his armour wouldn't break. Then on the enemy phase he'll try to retreat back and he'll literally drive into one of his bases, the one north of the Edelweiss and he'll end up exposing his rear but he'll try to hide himself with a smoke shell. Well anyway, I just launch another rocket and break his armour and then finish him off from the exact spot I had my lancers all along lol.

There was like absolutely no risk to me at all.

Oh, oh, oh... and 10 bucks says that if there is a Valkyria Chronicles 2, it'll be about Jaeger liberating his country.

I actually read about that Valkyria Chronicles anime last night, sometime in early 2009 right? I wish I could read Japanese, but alas I cannot.

I would definitely buy a game about that, it could potentially be very good if done right. Oh and I just finished the game, about 5 minutes ago ended up with 10 A's; 9 B's; 6 C's; and 3 D's for the storyline and sidequest missions.

My thoughts on the ending...
Just when I was ready to hate Faldio for being such an ass, he goes and redeems himself, though he could have told Welks and Alicia to get off the Marmota before he went all heroically suicidal, but then we wouldn't have gotten to see Leon and the ISARA in action I suppose. Overall I did really like the ending, I liked that they gave the main characters brief little "closure" summaries. I'm a sucker for happy endings though, so I did really like the ending. I'm a little pissed that we didn't actually find out who the Aged Old Gentleman in the War Cemetery was though, or maybe I missed it?? because before the last battle there was the seen where the old guy looked up to the sky and said "Belgen your son could really use some help" so I'm assuming the old guy knew Welkins father, so I'm a little upset that they never revealed the old guy's identity. Yea I guess once I finish absorbing it all, I'll have more thoughts....

It worked for Fire Emblem Radiant Dawn which is a direct sequel of Fire Emblem Path of Radiance. In Radiant Dawn you play as characters from the country that used to be the bad guys in Path of Radiance.

Aw man... and even worse is that I got D's and C's on missions you can easily get A's on too which is why I fail so hard.

Actually, I never did hate Faldio for what he did... I can understand exactly why he did it and his reasoning. I actually hated the fact that he chose to kill himself along with Maximilian when he could've just pushed Maximilian down there and gotten off the ship with Welkin and Alicia. The bastard.

Oh and I'd like to know who exactly the old man is too... from the looks of it he may have served with Welkin's father or may have been his commanding officer or something... maybe we'll find out if Sega releases some DLC featuring the events of EW1.

EDIT: Oh hey whaddya know, I did get an A on Selvaria's Last Stand

I still need to go back and read the in-game Glossary to see if I can glean any extra tidbits of information from it... When I first looked at the glossary and everything had a "New" tag next to it I got too intimidated to look...

I began the game playing it like Fire Emblem but by the end of the game I was getting straight A's. That's how stupid I was being with it lol.

Just saved the princess. That mission was easiest one up to this point. It only took two turns. I likely could have finished it in one. Just boasted Rosie's defense and boasted her attack on tanks greatly and one attack on the engine and mission complete.

Am I the only person bother by accuracy? It bothers me a lot enemies can hit me miles away when I miss when I'm nearly right on top of them. This bothers me the most with lancers and snipers.

Lancers in general have pretty horrid accuracy which is understandable, they shouldn't be able to take out tanks or troops from too far away. But yea, your snipers start off with some pretty shoddy accuracy, but as you upgrade your sniper rifles, the actual equipment not the class, once you get B and A accuracy rated equipment you'll hardly ever miss. I find that I tend to use the weapons with greater accuracy over power and I just aim for the head. As far as enemies tending to be more accurate, sometimes it seemed that way for me too, but it doesn't bug me too much. Cause there have been several cases where an enemy lancer could have walked right behind my tank and sent me to a Game Over, but instead they decided to end their turn

Oh yeah, btw... if you guys are wondering why you're not getting a DTS output even the game supports it... it's because you have to turn off the Dolby Digital output in the PS3 menu.

They really should've put it into the game options like Naughty Dog did with Uncharted. So yeah... that's how you get Valkyria Chronicles' sound (any other games that support it) to output in DTS... just to let ya'll know...

The enemies also tend to get cheap shots on you while you're moving on the map. It always seems they never take much damage while their moving, if their in range.

Moving along, Welkin's sister just died. I made a stupid mistake and ended a turn earlier than I should have. Ended up with a B rank. Likely missed the A rank, because of that mistake. Enjoying the game. I hope to finish it this weekend. My final score will be quite bad. I just known it.
