Well 2008 is nearly at a close so it is time to look back on what was best this year. Admittedly I did not play a lot of games that came out this year as I was catching up on all the games I missed from 2007 but I'd still like to hear what your favorites are for each system as well as overall.

I will only say that my top game for 2008 is Super Smash Bros. Brawl because I did not play enough for other systems to pick a favorite. I have put a ton of hours into that game and it definitely was not a let down. Really the only other major 2008 release I have played is Wrath of the Lich King and I cannot say I have enjoyed it very much so far.

This thread needs... categories...

Best Platformer:LittleBIGPlanet - PS3
-Creative, Innovative, Insta-Classic, but most importantly fun.

Best Sports Game:MLB 08:The Show - PS3
-Ugh, I don't really play sports games, but MLB 08:The Show has an amazingly fun career mode.

Best Puzzle Game:echochrome - PSP
-It's the only puzzle game I played this year, but it was still pretty good with a unique gameplay element.

Best Music/Rhythm Game:Beats - PSP??
-Did Beats come out this year or was it late 2007... anyway only music game I played recently, it lets you play your own .mp3's that's why I liked it.

Best Shooter:Resistance 2 - PS3
-Had I played CoD:WaW it may have won, but while Resistance 2's single player is good, its online co-op is amazingly fun.

Best Racing Game:Mario Kart Wii - Wii
-Only racing game I played this year, and it was a solid game, but didn't evoke the same excitement out of me as the previous titles in the series have.

Best Fighting Game:Super Smash Bros. Brawl - Wii
-Again, only fighting game I played this year, I suck at fighting games so I tend to stay away from them, Brawl was awesome, but I still say Melee is the best in the series.

Best RPG:Valkyria Chronicles - PS3
-I guess this game could have fallen under the strategy category, but this game is simply amazing and I can think of another game to put in Strategy , hopefully it's sales will pick up because I want a sequel. Persona 4 likely would have taken this category for me, but I don't have it yet

Best Action Game:Metal Gear Solid 4 - PS3
-Amazing game just behind MGS3 in the series for me, 3>4>1>2, but I don't hold the distaste for 2 that most do, but that is a whole other topic.

Best Adventure Game:Prince of Persia - PS3/X360
-The new PoP is a great game, a bit short, probably more of a rental, but the game itself is great, I have a feeling I'm overlooking another game though...

Best Strategy Game:Final Fantasy Tactics A2: Grimoire of the Rift - DS
-While I still think the original FF Tactics is one of if not the best SRPG of all time, this gem for the DS is very fun.

Best Wii Game:Super Smash Bros. Brawl
-While Brawl was great, I haven't been impressed, in fact I've been disappointed with the selection of games for the Wii this year.

Best Xbox360 Game: Don't own one

Best PS3 Game:Metal Gear Solid 4
-This was surprisingly closer than I thought it would be at the start of the year, that is not a discredit to MGS4, but it just shows how impressed I was by Valkyria Chronicles.

Best PC Game:Mass Effect
-Only PC game that I've really played this year, the sad part is, I never actually finished it... I got to the point where all I had to do was go to the last planet and I just stopped... lost interest I guess.

Best Game Overall:Metal Gear Solid 4
-The game was nearly flawless, and came close to the impossible of besting MGS3 in the series. I want them to patch in Trophies to give me an excuse to completely absorb myself in that game again.

You're giving MGS4 way too much credit... it was more cutscene than game.

I think a lot of people did that given how high of review scores it got. Not that I've played it to know.

moelman:

but you seem to forget any game that comes out either good or bad gets very high reviews...

it's like how we discussed on another thread, the reviewing system is absurd.

Yeah but I think in general review scores give a good idea at how good a game is. Games can still get poor reviews if they deserve it, but in some cases the hype and popularity of a title can contribute to a good score.

For me, Okami on the Wii was one of the highlights of the year, seeing as I didn't play it on the ps2. I also enjoyed Professor Layton and The World Ends With You on the DS.

Lulz, true. Still a great game though.

For me the best games this year were GTA IV and Mass Effect.
