Players love the game not the gore

Quote:
Research to be published online January 16 in the Personality and Social Psychology Bulletin shows that, contrary to popular belief, violence does not make video games more enjoyable. The study by investigators at the University of Rochester and Immersyve Inc., a player-experience research firm, found that for many people, gore actually detracts from a game's "fun factor," decreasing players' interest and desire to purchase a game. When designing the next generation of video games, added the authors, developers should remember: blood does not help the bottom line.
I think for me, extra violence sometimes helps and sometimes does not, it just depends on the game. In Resident Evil 4, it is so awesome to see Leon get his head chainsawed off and blood spatter everywhere. And even in a game like Assassin's Creed, the blood spatter from chopping down 20 guards for me makes it more realistic and makes the kills seem much more awesome. But in others, not a huge deal. I'm guessing that's how it is for a lot of you but what do you think?

Personally I think that gore is not an essential factor in a game, The only thing gore really adds is a sense of realism

Most games don't need blood and gore at all because most games don't revolve around violence... and then even then when there is some form of violence, blood and gore is still not necessary. As fun as it is to be able to see blood and gore in games such as Soul Calibur, it really doesn't need it... at all.

The need for blood and gore revolves around art style more than it does enjoyment for me. If it's necessary to have it, then it should be there. For example, I HATE how No More Heroes (Japanese, Europe and Australia version) doesn't have any blood and gore in it despite it being the original concept of Suda 51. It was part of the artstyle and was a tribute to many a gory movie that have been released over the years. Having that element taken out lessened the game.

As for whether I enjoy th blood and gore... yes and no. As I stated before, it all depends on art style and the concept of the game in the first place. Overall it's the overall game itself that I value, not the blood and gore. When buying a game, blood and gore is a non-issue and I don't even think about it. It would be as silly as purchasing one game over another because one has a chick with big tits while the other doesn't...

It depends, if I'm playing a horror game, then I want blood and gore. If I'm not, it's not that important of need.

But then it depends on the art style of the game too... some horror's require no blood.

I concur, for a Horror game gore is sometimes an essential element, In the end it all depends on the Genre and style of game, like Lynk said not every game revolves around violence.

Here's a great example of a game with an artstyle that demands blood and gore

I agree with the "It Depends" argument
Imagine blood effects when you attack with a sword in a Zelda game, that would just be silly XD

Of course it's not about the violence... who cares about blood & guts when there's T&A?

On a more serious note, neither B&G or T&A are major selling points for me when I buy or play a game. All I'm after is something that is fun and is at least a little bit challenging so I don't run through it in a weekend.

I voted no, I don't think blood and gore are required even in genres that would require it for "realism". Just look at Goldeneye, there wasn't any blood it was still one of the most memorable games from my childhood. Besides realism in games is overrated, shouldn't games provide us an escape from reality? However that's not to say blood and gore are bad or anything, when used properly and appropriately they can add to a game, it's a case by case thing.

I actually do enjoy gore. Realism goes before quantity though.

bad company didn't have any blood in it. i thought it was good, as long as the action is intense, don't really need gore.

Exactly... and visually, The Wind Waker will never age. In 5-10 years time we'll be laughing at how backward Twilight Princess looks but still be inspired by The Wind Waker.
