Fabula Nova Crystallis Final Fantasy XIII

Also known as the trio of upcoming Final Fantasy XIII games:
  • Final Fantasy XIII
  • Final Fantasy Versus XIII
  • Final Fantasy Agito XIII
I would consider myself to be a fairly large fan of the Final Fantasy games and with the flagship title Final Fantasy XIII, due to hit Japan later this year, there has been a healthy supply of new information about the titles, but let's break down each one first.

Final Fantasy XIII
- (PS3, Xbox360)
-- From what we know so far, there exists the city of Cocoon which is sort of like a floating utopia which is separated from the surface world known as Pulse. The wilderness of Pulse has been having strange effects on people and the citizens of Cocoon are becoming more and more wary of this situation. The government of Cocoon have begun to exile those that appear to be affected by the world of Pulse...

List of known characters:
  • Lightning - A young woman, formerly of the Cocoon military and the main protagonist of this adventure...
  • Snow Villiers - A cohort of Lightning's and the head of Team Nora, a resistance group against Cocoon...
  • Oerba Dia Vanille - Not too much is known about this fiery pigtailed red-head...
  • Sazh Katzroy - A black man with an afro, and afro that serves as a nest for a baby chocobo...

List of interesting links:

Final Fantasy Versus XIII - (PS3)
-- Very little is known about this entry in the Fabula Nova Crystallis Final Fantasy XIII compilation. The game itself while staying in the same universe as Final Fantasy XIII, will hold no connection with the aforementioned title, physically or plot-wise. Therefore the title is not a prequel or sequel to the main game in any way. The game is being directed by Tetsuya Nomura whom is most widely known due to his Kingdom Hearts and buckles and zippers fame. Nomura has stated that his goal with this game is to create a believable, realistic and dark world. Sqeenix has stated that this game may be the darkest Final Fantasy game yet. The small portion of the plot that has been revealed so far, has the game focused on the last heir of a small nation that holds the last Crystal protected by kings...

List of known characters:
  • Noctis Lucis Caelum - The last heir to the Caelum dynasty, which rules over the only remaining city-state to control the Crystals, and the main protagonist of the game...
  • Stella Nox Fleuret - The enemy to Noctis, although undesirably so, she is the princess of the country Tenebrae...

List of interesting links:
Final Fantasy Agito XIII
- (PSP)
--Agito, Latin for "to put in motion" was originally planned to be released for mobile phones, but that was later canceled and the project has moved onto the PSP. The battle system is said to be based off of Crisis Core: Final Fantasy VII, but it will allow for the control of multiple characters. Like Versus, this game is its own entity, not directly related to either XIII or Versus XIII. The story appears to start in a magic school and expand to more locations of the game world. The world is called Orience and the main governing body is fairly militaristic in nature. The game itself has been described as an online RPG, but not necessarily in the MMO aspect. Whether this means you will create your own character, or choose from a few and play cooperatively with others online is unknown at this time...

List of known characters:
  • No named characters are known at this time, however a trailer revealed 12 different characters all with different weaponry.

Lightning is <3. The demo gameplay videos that came out yesterday look amazing, makes me want the game even more. Only really following the main game since I don't have a PS3 or PSP to play Versus or Agito on. I think the world sounds pretty cool and amazing graphics aside the visual style is really good too. Hopefully the gameplay will live up to that (looks like it will).

Yeah, there are a lot of demo gameplay videos out and about on the likes of YouTube and such now that the Final Fantasy VII: Advent Children Blu-ray has been released. For those that don't know, the special edition of the aforementioned Blu-ray included a demo for the Japanese version of Final Fantasy XIII. I've been seriously contemplating importing a copy myself, but I currently lack the funds to do so, plus the FFVII:AC Bluray comes with Japanese and English sound, but only Japanese subtitles, for some fucked reason, I thought the Japs liked to read engrish.

Also I've updated the first post with Versus and Agito information and links.

And although this is a "Final Fantasy XIII Mega-thread" and I'll be updating both the thread and the first post as new information is revealed, don't hesitate to post about your favorite Final Fantasy games, or moments. I'm sure Jeff would love to share his opinions on the infamous, "Laughter cutscene" of Final Fantasy X.

The worst scene in videogame history!

Can't get enough of the FF XIII footage, it just looks so damn awesome. Only FF game I've played so far is III remake for DS but between now and when this game is released I'll be playing quite a few others.

Heard on IGN that they are already starting to record English dialog...could we see it sooner than expected? Doubt it, but normally they don't start doing that till the Japanese version is done.

Here is the article that I think Jeff was talking about, but was too damn lazy to link to himself.

IGN - FF XIII Hits Sooner Than You Think?

Also here is a link to a Final Fantasy Q&A session that IGN did, it mostly concerns Dissidia Final Fantasy for PSP, but there are some interesting tidbits about FF XIII and Final Fantasy in general.

IGN - Final Fantasy Reader Q&A

This tidbit that I found most interesting regards the voice options for Final Fantasy XIII.

Yoshinori Kitase: Regarding Dissidia, because it's a UMD, the voice takes alot of memory - if we wanted to make that choice available, we wouldn't be able to squeeze it onto one disk – so at the moment it's not possible.

IGN: And for Final Fantasy XIII might that be an option?

Yoshinori Kitase: Obviously, when we talk about XIII it's for PS3 and Xbox – with PS3 being on Blu ray there would be enough memory, but on Xbox probably not. At the moment we're thinking of releasing the voice in English only. Are there many people who would like to play with Japanese voices?
Also, I'll update the first post with these links as well.

FF13 has been downgraded for SUCK BOX 360
that suck box 360 aka dvd heater has no game at 1080p. Not only games look bad on suck box all games are downgraded for that suck box 360

I am hearing that FF13 will be 12 DVDs on suck box 360. shame on SE for downgrading the game for crap box 360

Now it looks crap for suck box 360 version

KZ2 looks 50 times better than all suck box games. FF13 looked good initially too now the game is destroyed for the suck box 360

I don't really get what the big deal is though, I mean the first shots of a game are almost always pre-rendered or shopped now. Plus the comparison shots are from the demo right? I wonder what build of the game the demo was "shipped" with. But the second shots have some pretty ugly parts, that I would hope get fixed before release, at the same time though, I probably wouldn't have noticed some of the stuff had it not been pointed out... I don't really have an eye for that sort of stuff.

Ok, a lot of new information has come out lately, but I'm way too lazy to update every time I read something. Which also means I'm too lazy to go back and find links, but I'll just bullet point some small bits of new info...
  • Each character will have one specific summon, Snow/Shiva, Lightning/Odin, and when that character activates their summon the other party members "withdraw" from the battle. There is also a "Gestalt(sp?) mode" where the character and his/her summon combine. For example Shiva turns into a bike and Snow gets to hop on, kinky right...
  • It has been "confirmed" that the English version of the game will not include the option for the Japanese voice track. Much to my dismay. I hope they'll offer it as DLC or something...
  • Apparently the Xbox360 version will be "about 3 discs" so interpret that how you will.
  • The main story/questline is said to be 40-50 hours of content.
  • Lots of new characters have been revealed, they're prolly on Wikipedia by now.
  • The PS3 version is about 90% complete and the Xbox360 was 60%, or 70% I don't remember

So anybody have anything else to add?
