What do I want to see most...
When it comes to E3, its the games that I don't know about yet that in all likelihood wont be released until after the next E3 that I am most interested in. So some games I'm looking forward to learning more about are...
- Golden Sun DS
- New Kingdom Hearts game (KH3?)
- Final Fantasy: The 4 Heroes of Light
- Valkyria Chronicles II
Those are pretty much the only games I know about, that I want to know more about.
Predictions?
This E3 feels a little different, maybe it is just because I'm busier now than I usually am at this time of the year and haven't had the time to really follow the rumors, but it feels like the big 3 have everything laid out in plain sight this year. The Wii is going to show new Zelda and 3DS, the PS3 is going to focus on 3D and Move, and the 360 is going to focus on Halo: Reach and Natal. The "surprises" that the big 3 are going to reveal are where I'm at a loss this year. Last year everybody knew about 360 lining up a Metal Gear game (Rising) the PSPgo and PS3 Slim were horribly leaked, and well Nintendo was just Nintendo. So what do I think will be the surprises this year...
Nintendo, really I have no idea wtf Nintendo is ever thinking. Therefore I'm going to throw out some wild guesses/wishes mixed in with things I think may actually happen. There are some new Wiimote rumors running around the net; I'm thinking it's a new Wii-mote with built-in MotionPlus bundled with the new Zelda game. I also expect Iwata to laugh at some point I'll venture to guess that it'll be right after he reveals the 3DS by pulling it out of his coat pocket. Also, they will retcon the Corocoro magazine Pokémon Black/White reveal and say that trainers will be customizable. We will also see a new Wii accessory to go with the Nunchuck, Classic Controller (Pro), Balance Board and Vitality Sensor. Yeah...
Sony's going to be pretty obvious too, focus on 3D, Move and sequels, so where are the surprises? I think we're going to get a mention or at least a nod of a pending PSP2. A few months ago I would have guaranteed that we would see the PSP2, but lately the rumors about it have slowed to practically a stop and that worries me, plus we know that Sony is horrible at keeping hardware secrets. That being said, they need to mention something about a PSP2 otherwise they are just admitting defeat to Nintendo in the handheld market. While the PSP is still doing strong in Japan it is basically lifeless elsewhere and at this point even with a pretty strong game lineup this year and last year the announcement of a PSP2 is likely the only thing that can revitalize its market (with better anti-piracy measures).
Another thing I'm expecting to hear is a PSN Premium service, which would be a paid online service similar to Xbox Live. The difference would be that everything available for free now, would still be free if you choose not to pay for the premium. That raises the question of what the incentive would be to pay and the obvious things are extra features that Xbox live has, things like cross-game chatting, but how about we throw in a real surprise, something that could actually increase console sales. PS2 Backwards Compatibility; pack that in with the premium PSN and even better if someone doesn't want premium PSN make the PS2 BC available to them in another way. Of course ideally it would just be a firmware update

. As for more from Sony, I'm expecting some new IP announcements because they've blown the lid off of all their sequels already, Killzone 3, Infamous 2, LBP2 and GT5, so what games are left to surprise, nothing except maybe Resistance 3 so we need to see an exciting new IP.
Moving on the the 360, which I care about least for obvious reasons. Anyway, some things I'd expect, how about a FFXIII flashback, secure FF vs. XIII and steal exclusivity away from Sony again. Natal we're expecting, but from what we've seen from Natal it doesn't distance itself from the Wii or Move, so what would really set it apart? Show us a sweet demonstration of head-tracking to create simulated 3D on a 2D screen, it's the perfect counter to Sony's emphasis on 3D gaming, cheaper than a 3DTV and no need for shitty ass glasses. Now what I really want to see from Microsoft is the development of more 1st party games which is where I think the 360 really lacks. That's pretty much all I know about the 360.
Who will win?
Although Nintendo has the coolest new hardware that we know about going into the show (3DS) a new handheld doesn't win E3 and I don't think Zelda can do it alone. Plus Nintendo has a long way to go from it's previous few E3 appearances. That leaves us with Sony and Microsoft. I think that going into the show Sony has the lead with the most stuff that we know about and that we're looking forward to. However, I think Microsoft has the most potential to shock and surprise and with E3 it is always the thing that catches us off-guard that we remember the most and all the companies know this. In the end I'm going to go with my bias and pick
Sony.
