Lynk shouldn't start referring to himself in the third-person...

I've stayed away from PC gaming for a hell of a long time because to be honest, I can't be fucked having to deal with all the variables that go into creating your own rig. So, for a long time I've stayed clueless about this kind of stuff, but with the help of Mav and Jeff and some on the hunt education of what goes into making a gaming PC, I've come up with a list parts for my new PC.

Of course, the reason I'm posting this all up here is if people have suggestions/comments/critiques to make about this whole thing. That said, I have a lot of money to spend and I know a couple of things on this list aren't NEEDED, but you and I both know they're very nice to have and dammit, I'm gonna have 'em.

Mav and Jeff acted as a guide for the kind of things I should be looking for and what level of hardware I should be looking at, but I chose all of this stuff myself. So anyway, here's what I've got on the list to get so far...

CPU: Intel Core i7-950 Bloomfield 3.06GHz 4 x 256KB L2 Cache 8MB L3 Cache LGA 1366 130W Quad-Core Processor

Motherboard: ASUS P6X58D-E LGA 1366 Intel X58 SATA 6Gb/s USB 3.0 ATX Intel Motherboard

RAM: G.SKILL 6GB (3 x 2GB) 240-Pin DDR3 SDRAM DDR3 1333 (PC3 10666) Triple Channel Kit Desktop Memory

Video Card: EVGA 012-P3-1470-AR GeForce GTX 470 (Fermi) 1280MB 320-bit GDDR5 PCI Express 2.0 x16 HDCP Ready SLI Support Video Card

Main Drive (SSD): Intel X25-M Mainstream 2.5" 80GB SATA II MLC Internal Solid State Drive

Secondary Drive (HDD): Seagate Barracuda XT ST32000641AS 2TB 7200 RPM 64MB Cache SATA 6.0Gb/s 3.5" Internal Hard Drive

Optical Drive: SONY Black 18X DVD-ROM 48X CD-ROM SATA DVD-ROM Drive

Power Supply: CORSAIR 650W ATX12V / EPS12V SLI Ready CrossFire Ready 80 PLUS Certified Active PFC Compatible with Core i7 Power Supply

Computer Case: Corsair Obsidian Series 700D Black Aluminium / Steel ATX Full Tower Computer Case

Of course, if you guys have any suggestions, good time to make them since I'm only just scouting and haven't actually ordered/bought any of this stuff yet.

Oh and here's what I already have...

Monitor: Samsung 23" widescreen LCD-LED backlit monitor

HDTV: Sony 40" X Series Full HD Bravia LCD TV

Mouse: Logitech Performance Mouse MX

Keyboard: Microsoft Wireless Entertainment Desktop 8000

Gaming Mouse: Logitech Wireless Gaming Mouse G700

Gameboard: Logitech G13 Advanced Gameboard

I'm also thinking about updating my sound system in the future because the one I have atm doesn't use HDMI, but since that mobo I chose has an optical out, I guess I can use that for now.

Oh, and I'm also thinking about getting a better headset because Jeff complains that he can hear my game through his headset when we play :xp

Wait.... Your Building a Gaming PC and your using Intel Over AMD? Excuse me one moment I gotter go Slap somebody...

*Hawkeye Goes and Slaps Mav and Jeff*

Righ Some questions Lynk, Are you putting the all the parts together yourself?

Have you had any experience on working inside a PC, E.g. upgrading Ram, adding a 2nd harddrive to an existing PC? The Only reason I ask is I have just built my own gaming Rig a few months ago. It wasn't hard but it was mind numbing trying to put it all together.

What is your choice of Operating System?

I wound't go for a few of your choices, due to comments and suggestion I been told and read about... However it your choice... Your Money... Ill write down my PC specs for comparison

Intel + nVidia is my personal preference.

Yes, I am.

I've got a lot of experience with installing new ram, hdd's, etc. Only thing I don't really know how to do is the initial wiring for it, but Mav said he'd walk me through that when it came time.

Windows 7 64bit... which is what I'm running now.

Well looking at your choice of motherboard... It got to do with how well thing work together, For one you got three heat sinks on there, with two I would be worried about, Will your Cards and other internal parts work with them or would they not fit... I read an article in a PC building magazine and showed some examples of motherboards that were badly designed or didn't fit together very well Graphic cards.

My Motherboard - Asus M4A785TD-V EVO
You can see the heatsink is futher away from the Graphic card Slot, Compare to your choice

Also the SATA plugs... I find best when their face up and not at 90 degrees to the board like they are on that board. Mind you that factor depends on the size of the case and how much space you may have.

I'm sure it'll be fine, but I'll look at other mobo's and see what I find.

It your choice, but make sure you read all the reviews you can find about it, and see what other PC builders Think of it... Stay away from reviews on retailers and go for the independent reviewers

Have you seen my Case? it was one of the biggest I've seen at the computer market fair and it still has one or two bugs I had to short out.

I've already been reading up on reviews and such and have discovered that it's not a good idea to get any mobo that has sata 3 and integrated usb3.0 right now. The reason is that apparently, if the usb3 and sata 3 are active it turns your pci-e 2.0 x16 into a x8...

So that means I'm throwing out this mobo and because of that I'll have to change the Seagate to a different model...

*goes to edit post*

Why would I know anything about your case since you never posted anything about it in this thread before my post that you just quoted?

^^^ EDITED OPENING POST
Crossed off mobo, replaced seagate hdd with western digital hdd.

Thermaltake V9 BlacX dimensions: 16.97 x 7.52 x 18.5 in
Corsair Obsidian Series 700D dimensions: 24.00 x 9.00 x 24.00 in

Mine's bigger than yours, nyaaa lol

Well that was pointless. Anyway, like I said in my previous post. I've crossed out the mobo I originally listed and am looking for a replacement.

Can you guys help me out on this one?

Needs to run i5 (LGA 1156) cpu and ram needs to be ddr3 1333

I've had a look at that one already and it has the same problem as the one I chose initially. Takes bandwidth from the psi-e bus turning an x16 slot turning into an x8. Actually that's not entirely true... the usb 3 and sata 3 work at slower speeds than normal unless you select "i/o level up" in the bios and that's what gives the usb 3 and sata 3 its normal bandwidth and turns the pci-e into an x8.

*sighs*

It also brings up the question as to why people bother to SLi/CrossFire their GPU's when most of the mobo's out there only seem to be able to run two pci-e x16's at half strength each.

EDIT: Char Ell from LucasForums has linked me to the same... well not exactly the same, looks to be a revised version of the one you posted up Hawk: Newegg.com - ASUS P7P55D-E Pro LGA 1156 Intel P55 SATA 6Gb/s USB 3.0 ATX Intel Motherboard

He says that issue I mentioned is resolved in this version.

^^^ UPDATED OPENING POST LIST
Updated mobo and changed secondary drive back to seagate

^^^ UPDATED LIST IN OPENING POST
These have been replaced in order to get a stable USB 3.0 + SATA III compatible setup going...

CPU: Intel Core i5-760 Lynnfield 2.8GHz 8MB L3 Cache LGA 1156 95W Quad-Core Desktop Processor

Motherboard: ASUS P7P55D-E Pro LGA 1156 Intel P55 SATA 6Gb/s USB 3.0 ATX Intel Motherboard

RAM: G.SKILL 4GB (2 x 2GB) 240-Pin DDR3 SDRAM DDR3 1333 (PC3 10666) Dual Channel Kit Desktop Memory

I am going to part with this advice to you Lynk,

Formatting a 1 TB drive took quite a bit of time, just be prepared for how long it takes with a 2 TB drive.

When you put your motherboard, CPU, Ram and powersupply together for the first time inside your case to check their all working, remember to check that your case has that internal speaker because this tell you if their working together properly. However my case doesn't have one. Thankfully it had a Graphic processor built into the motherboard...

I know you're trying to be helpful, Hawk. But this isn't the first time I've used a computer. I may be new to building my own machine from scratch but I know quite a lot from my pwn experience and stuff my brother has taught me.

I mean, my brother and I have been figuring out what makes computers tick since we got our first one back in 1993. Give me a little credit.

Anyway, I've gotten the first step out of the way... now it's time to hunt down all of these components and try and get em for a fair price. My overall spend is 3000aud but my estimation is that I'll probably be able to get all of this stuff for 200aud.

And if that sounds expensive, that's because it is and that's really how it is down here with computer components unless you steal them...

@ Metal Man: Is it really huge? I've always wondered how people manage to lug around huge laptops everywhere. It's like they're trying to hijack a satellite or something lol.

Okay here we go... got some quotes back from a few places and it looks like it will cost between 2000 - 2200 aud. The best quote I got was from a place called "Tecs Computer Megastore" which was pretty good. They had all of the big parts in stock except for the mobo which they can order in. They'd also build the PC for me and give me a 2 year warranty on the parts and service for free. Of course, it costs 2199aud to buy it all from them.

There's another place that'll give me a quote but they haven't gotten back to me yet.

Anyway, everything is there though the RAM and optical drive were different... but that's fine.

RAM: Kingston 6GB (3 x 2GB) 240-Pin DDR3 SDRAM DDR3 1333 (PC3 10600) Triple Channel Kit Desktop Memory

DVD: SAMSUNG Black 22X DVD+R 8X DVD+RW 16X DVD+R DL 22X DVD-R 6X DVD-RW 12X DVD-RAM 16X DVD-ROM 48X CD-R 32X CD-RW 48X CD-ROM 2MB Cache SATA CD/DVD Burner - CD / DVD Burners

So yeah... we'll see how things go from here...

I don't get why they list all the read speeds for the disc drive, just fucking say "reads CD/DVD, burns both too."
