Metal Gear live-action movie

Hideo Kojima himself confirmed back in 2006 (I think) that there is a Metal Gear movie in the works. As we all know, the Metal Gear Solid series is almost like an interactive movie in of itself, but how well do you think a movie adaptation of the series would do? It's one thing to play as Snake, but will it be just as good to sit back and watch? Personally, I doubt it. The whole thrill of Metal Gear is the gamepley. While the cutscenes are great, and long, they're still cut scenes and can't be considered as being the same as watching a movie.

Another thing about Metal Gear is that it mimics movie genres which are inherently bad in the first place. As much as we love Metal Gear, I think there would be too many moments I'd find things to be a little... cheesy as a movie... and that is part of the Metal Gear series charm, the cheesiness.. I just think it works best as a game.

Who knows though, could end up kicking ass... in the end we all know we'll all go and see it unless it's ungodly bad like the Dead or Alive movie or the Doom movie... *shudders* ...

Ming-Na would be great to play Mei-Lin XD. Has there been any news of any actors or director signing onto the project?

Michael De Luca is a producer... who cares...

And I heard awhile back that David Hayter, the voice of the English version of Snake, who is also a screenplay writer (he worked on X-Men and X-Men 2) submitted an outline of what he thought the movie would be like but it got rejected... Other than that, aside from Kojima-san saying it's officially being made... there's nothing I really know about it... *looks around* hopefully someone else has heard some rumours I haven't.

To me, I always thought that Metal Gear had the best potential to be translated into a film. Although I've only played the first one off the Playstation console I took a liking to the story and thought the game had a nice balance of giving you control over the course of the game while telling a story at the same time. That doesn't necessarily mean the story will automatically work well for a theatrical film and much of that has to do with you losing the ability to work your way through the game to complete the story. The games put you into the shoes of Snake to control his actions while a movie will only show you what's on the screen and you can't do anything about it, it's pretty much like what you said Lynk.

Anyway, this is the only video game that I really hope its movie adaptation will be successful. There's a lot of potential in it to have some really great action sequences. I remember the first MGS on the Playstation had Snake repelling down a wall while trying to avoid the steam pipes and Liquid Snakes helicopter shooting. That would be a great action scene for the movie.

Also, there still hasn't been any news on what the story the movie will be based on is there? I could see a trilogy being made if the movie is very successful in following the story of the first 3 games. To be honest, I really want to see the story of the first game be made into a movie but I get the feeling the movie plot will be based on either the latest game installment (MGS 4) or a completely original plot for the film.

Its going to go the same way as the DoA and Doom movie's, it will have a brief period when fans of the games will be interested, then it will go to being a shelf filler on the bargin section.

In short It will probably suck... but who knows maybe they will somehow turn it around and make a decent job of it.

I think it could work out, with the right script and cast.

The problem is that producers don't want a movie made for fans only, they want something that appeals to the general public. (read: make more money) So that means It would probably have some sort of a love-story and whatnot that would basically ruin it.

Well obviously my first thoughts are that almost all video game movies are bad, but I could see a Metal Gear movie having potential, whether its done right or not, is doubtful.

@ darky: The biggest reason why Metal Gear would have the best chance to work as a movie more than most other videogames is because Metal Gear is based on pretty much every cliché action movie ever made.

EDIT: Metal Gear Solid - The Movie ...I guess this is a good place as any to find out about the progress of the Metal Gear movie...
